Josh Arnon

Josh is a Jewish autistic democratic socialist who is a lifelong resident of Assembly District 74 and has a history of fighting for working people against special interests. As a lead on the Tax the Rich Campaign, he stood up to Andrew Cuomo, stopping the former governor from making devastating cuts to hospital funding, mass transit, and public education at the height of the COVID pandemic. Josh has lived at Waterside Plaza for his entire life and remembers when his formerly Mitchell-Lama apartment complex was affordable. He knows that the affordability crisis in NY is man-made and a better world is possible.

New Yorkers Deserve

Permanently Affordable Housing

A Social Housing Development Authority would allow NY to function as a developer that can finance, build, acquire, and preserve housing. The cost of rent would be capped at 25% of one’s income and then rent stabilized, and all of the profits would go toward maintenance. Too often, we are presented with a false choice of building unaffordable housing or no new housing at all. This is the most equitable, long-term solution to fix our housing crisis.

Universal High Quality Healthcare

The New York Health Act is a desperately needed piece of legislation that would guarantee healthcare to all New Yorkers and eliminate co-pays, deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, prescription costs, and premiums. It would cover medical, prescription, vision, dental, hearing, long-term care, mental health treatment, and reproductive care.

Free CUNY & SUNY

CUNY was free for residents from 1847 to 1976. Since the 70s, the cost of tuition has gone up and NY has repeatedly declined to hire mental health and advising staff. Likewise, SUNY should also be tuition-free for residents. We need a massive reinvestment into education that will allow residents to pursue higher education and be prepared for the job market without going into crushing debt.

Six Minute Transit Service

The frequency of trains and buses is extremely inconsistent and at their slowest during weekends and off-peak hours. The people most likely to take these slower rides are Black and Brown New Yorkers. Increasing service frequency would also decrease the need for commuters to wait in the dark for long periods of time, eliminating much of transit crime.

No Casino

Josh is the only candidate who testified in the first public hearing against a casino that would have been right next to the United Nations. We won through our community efforts and stopped the casino in its tracks. He is taking the fight to Albany to continue fighting for his local community against corporate interests.

“ ‘I’m a lifelong resident of this district with a history of speaking truth to power. I was one of the leaders of the Tax the Rich coalition [...] Now, with Trump’s impending budget cuts, we find ourselves in a similar situation […] raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy or make major cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP. As Zohran's decisive win demonstrates, people are hungry for a movement of new leaders that support them rather than the special interests that exploit them for profit.’ “

Freedom Plaza Casino Draws Strong Support at CAC Public Hearing, Opposition Still Persists

Josh Arnon, a lifelong Waterside Plaza resident, said:

‘Frankly, the entire project is an insult to the collaborative spirit of the United Nations…The overwhelming community opposition to this plan is astounding. This plan will destroy virtually all small businesses in the area, and it is difficult to overstate the plan’s effect on traffic and congestion.’ “

Volatile and Vengeful: How Scott Rudin Wielded Power in Show Business

“ ‘People are acting like the industry is changing, but the fact that someone like Scott is still in power makes me doubtful of that,’ said Josh Arnon, 25, who worked at Mr. Rudin’s office from October 2018 to August 2019. ‘It’s crazy that so many in the industry know about it and nothing has changed.’ “
